Machinal — Combustible Company

Machinal

Combustible Company/ St. Croix Festival Theatre· St. Croix Falls

Aug 20 – Aug 23, 2026

This is a re-imagining of Sophie Treadwell’s expressionistic play about a woman trapped in a mechanical society that dictates how women should act and live. It turns out that we’re all a part of this machine we call a society and an economy. It also turns out that it's no way to live. It was 1928 when Machinal premiered on Broadway, only a year after the events that inspired it. Sophie Treadwell was a journalist covering what became a media circus — the trial and electrocution of Ruth Snyder. The industrial age and mechanization was reaching a dehumanizing zenith. It was a feeling not unfamiliar to those living a hundred years later. A long-time member of the company, this is Renee Hatton's directorial debut!

Dir. Pirronne Yousefzadeh

A play about a play—and the artists who risked everything to tell it. Inspired by the true story of Sholem Asch’s seminal Yiddish work, God of Vengeance , and its infamous 1923 obscenity trial, INDECENT is a haunting, klezmer-infused play with music that traces the turbulent journey of a troupe determined to stage a work deemed “indecent.” As their story unfolds across continents and decades, so too does a powerful meditation on censorship, nationalism and the policing of queer love. At once tender and thunderously relevant, this breathtaking theatrical experience shines a light on the enduring struggle between artistic expression and societal control. In a moment when questions of whose stories are “acceptable” feel increasingly urgent, INDECENT invites us to bear witness to the courage of artists, the cost of silence and the unshakable power of theater itself.

Cynthia Oliver | Turn. Turning. TURNT

Red Eye Theater· Minneapolis

Apr 29 – May 1, 2027

— a triptych of movement experiments spanning before, during, and after the global pandemic. Drawing on double dutch as life skill training, Afro Futurist aspiration, and the hard-won wisdom of collective fallow, Oliver's work asks what we have summoned through difficulty — and what we owe ourselves as we return to moving, remembering, and recovering for a world anew. Cynthia has deep ties to this region, and her arrival here is a return as much as a debut.

The Ostentatious Outlaws of Neehai Valley — Trademark Theater, by Keith Hovis

The Ostentatious Outlaws of Neehai Valley

By Keith Hovis

Trademark Theater+Park Square Theatre/ Park Square Theatre· St. Paul

Jun 2 – Jun 27, 2027

Dir. Tyler Michaels King

A World Premiere Co-Production, in Partnership with Park Square Theatre. Welcome to Neehai Valley, a quiet western town where residents follow the teachings of a literal bush, and conformity is both spiritual doctrine and social glue. Into this tightly wound world steps an outsider whose arrival - along with a pair of magical capris - sparks awakenings absolutely no one is prepared for. Doubt spreads. Desire explodes. And existential crises throw the town into glorious chaos. A brand new, laugh-out-loud musical comedy, The Ostentatious Outlaws of Neehai Valley smashes religion, queerness, and community into an absurd, genre-bending, wildly irreverent spectacle filled with outrageous characters, one-liners, and an earnest dash of heart. Beneath its camp lies a story about belief, belonging, repression, and the courage to question the narratives that shape us. Blending the high-energy theatricality of classic musical comedy with biting satire and unapologetic weirdness, the show channels the spirit of cult-favorites like The Book of Mormon , Little Shop of Horrors and Kinky Boots while carving out something entirely its own—bold, subversive, and unexpectedly heartfelt.

26/27 Season — Theater Latté Da, by Paula Vogel Score & Original Music by Lisa Gutkin & Aaron Halva

26/27 Season

By Paula Vogel Score & Original Music by Lisa Gutkin & Aaron Halva

Theater Latté Da/ Ritz Theater· Minneapolis

Dates TBA

Dir. Pirronne Yousefzadeh

Each season, we ask ourselves not only what work we are called to make, but what this moment demands of us. As artists and as a community, we carry a responsibility to respond—to listen closely, to reflect honestly, and to act with intention. At Latté Da, we believe music theater is uniquely capable of capturing the possibility as well as the needs of our time. It allows us to hold complexity, to honor contradiction, and to invite both reflection and connection. The works we gather this season are part of an ongoing conversation about who we are, what we carry, and what we are shaping together. With INDECENT, we turn to a story about artists determined to tell the truth in the face of suppression— an urgent reminder of the enduring relationship between art, censorship, and cultural memory. In ALL IS CALM: THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914, we witness a moment of shared humanity that transcends division, offering a profound meditation on peace, even in the midst of conflict. LIZARD BOY invites us into a contemporary myth of identity and belonging, asking what it means to be seen—and to accept oneself—in a world that often resists difference. With the world premiere of SHE’S COME UNDONE, we embark on a deeply human journey of healing and self-reclamation, tracing one woman’s path toward acceptance, resilience, and the possibility of found family. And in collaboration with the University of Minnesota, SPRING AWAKENING provides a vital examination of young people coming of age within systems that seek to silence them—centering the urgency of listening to, and learning from, the next generation. Taken together, these works reflect a shared commitment: to engage with the present moment not by simplifying it, but by meeting it with curiosity, conviction, and care. They ask us to consider the impact of silence and voice, the necessity of empathy, and the role we each play in shaping a more just and expansive future. To gather in the theater is an act of trust. It is an opportunity to sit together in reflection, to encounter one another more deeply, and to be moved—perhaps even changed—by what we witness. We look forward to sharing that space and this season with you.
